Ryder's birth parents are Joyce and Grant Colman. After his birth he was adopted by Mary and Brian Ellison. Brian died in 1976 and eventually Mary married Don Hughes.
Don and Mary left the show with Ryder (who was then called Teddy Ellison).
Next we heard from Don and Mary was at Chris and Nancy's 50th wedding anniversary. Don came back to town alone and announced that they were expecting (this was the same time Kim and Bob were pregnant with Christopher). A few months later Don, Mary, and little Christina Nancy came back to Oakdale for Chris Hughes' memorial service.
In 1996 Teddy Ellison came back to Oakdale alone as a teenager. He called himself Ryder Hughes and while in town he dated Nikki and became friends with Dani Andropolous.
